The tiers describe the compressor — the pump at the heart of your AC or heat pump. A single-stage compressor has one speed: 100% or off. A two-stage compressor adds a low gear — typically around two-thirds capacity — so it can loaf along on mild days and only hit full power when it's genuinely hot. A variable-speed (inverter-driven) compressor adjusts continuously, like a dimmer switch instead of a light switch, matching output to exactly what the house needs minute by minute.

Higher staging generally comes with a higher SEER2 rating (the federal cooling-efficiency metric), but efficiency is only half the story. The bigger difference is runtime.

Why staging matters more in KC than in a dry climate
