A tank water heater keeps 40–50 gallons hot around the clock. Use it up — back-to-back showers plus a laundry load — and you wait through a recovery period while it reheats. A tankless unit stores nothing: when you open a tap, a high-output gas burner heats water as it flows through. You never run out, but the flow it can heat at once is capped — two showers plus a dishwasher at the same moment can outrun a smaller unit.

The plain-English trade: a tank can run out but serves everything at once; a tankless never runs out but can only serve so much at once. To heat water instantly, a tankless burner is several times more powerful — measured in BTU (British thermal units) of gas input — than a tank's, and that drives most of the hidden install costs below.

When each wins in a KC home

Tank wins for smaller households, budget-driven replacements, and emergency swaps — when the old tank fails on a Friday, a like-for-like tank is the fastest, cheapest path to hot showers. It also wins in homes without gas service, where electric tankless rarely pencils out.

Tankless wins for larger households tired of cold third showers, for homes where floor space matters (it hangs on a wall), and for owners staying long enough to collect the payback: tankless units commonly last 15–20+ years versus 8–12 for a tank, and burn gas only when you're actually using hot water. One KC-specific reality check before anything else: our water is hard. Municipal water across the metro — Kansas City, Olathe, and most surrounding systems — carries enough dissolved mineral to scale up a tankless heat exchanger. Two smaller line items worth knowing before you sign either way: tankless units create a brief "cold-water sandwich" — a slug of cool water between uses — that a small recirculation setup can eliminate if it bothers you, and a replacement tank in the same spot may still need code updates (expansion tank, pan, seismic strapping, venting fixes) that weren't required when the old one went in. Neither changes the verdict; both belong on an honest quote.

The rule: big household + gas service + staying 7+ years + willing to maintain it → tankless. Small household, tight budget, emergency replacement, or no appetite for annual flushes → a quality tank, and no apology needed.
