Every mechanical sound is a symptom, and most map to a short list of causes. Here's the field translation:
- Squealing or screeching — a blower belt slipping or a motor bearing running dry. Annoying now, a seized motor later.
- Grinding — metal on metal, almost always failing motor bearings. This one earns a shutdown.
- Clicking, then nothing — the system is trying to start and failing. On a furnace that points to the ignition system; on an AC it's usually a weak capacitor or a failing contactor relay.
- Buzzing — electrical. A chattering contactor, a failing capacitor, or a loose connection arcing. Outdoors, a loud buzz from the condenser often means the compressor is straining to start.
- Banging or booming at furnace startup — delayed gas ignition. Gas pools in the burner box before lighting, then ignites all at once. This is a safety issue, not a quirk.
- Gurgling or bubbling — refrigerant moving through a line with a leak in it, or a condensate drain fighting a partial clog.
