Manual J is the ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) procedure for calculating exactly how much heating and cooling capacity a home actually needs. It accounts for:
- Square footage and ceiling height (not just floor area)
- Insulation R-values in walls, ceiling, floor, slab
- Window types, sizes, and which direction they face
- Air infiltration (how leaky the envelope is)
- Internal heat gains (people, lights, kitchen)
- Local design temperatures — for the KC metro that's ~5°F winter design and ~95°F summer design
The output is a BTU/hr heating load and a separate cooling load. Equipment is sized to match those loads, not to a square-footage rule of thumb.
