Three forces gang up on your upstairs. First, the stack effect: warm air rises, so the heat generated and absorbed by the whole house drifts upward and pools on the second floor. Second, the attic: upstairs ceilings sit directly under a space that can hit brutal temperatures on a July afternoon in the KC sun, radiating heat down through the insulation all evening. Third, and most fixable, the system only measures one floor. Most two-story homes across the metro — from Prairie Village colonials to newer builds in Parkville — run a single system with a single thermostat, usually on the first floor. When downstairs hits the setpoint, the system shuts off, no matter what the bedrooms upstairs are doing. Add ductwork that was routed for the shortest, cheapest path — which usually favors the main level — and the upstairs runs hot by design.

Why the second floor loses every summer
When it's a tuning problem vs. a design problem
A useful field rule: if the upstairs runs modestly warmer — a couple of degrees — the system is probably capable and just needs balancing. If bedrooms are drastically hotter every summer evening no matter what you try, you're likely looking at a duct-design or capacity problem: undersized upstairs supply runs, too little return air pulling hot air off the second floor, or a system sized without a real room-by-room load calculation. Greater Kansas City's climate zone 4A makes this worse than milder markets — our long, humid summers mean the attic bakes for months, and the same house flips in winter, with the upstairs overheating while the first floor runs cool. A fix that only works for one season is a half-fix.
Three ways homeowners make it worse
Three well-intentioned moves that backfire, over and over on service calls:
- Closing most of the downstairs vents. Partially favoring upstairs is fine; slamming half the registers shut drives up static pressure — the resistance the blower pushes against — which cuts total airflow, strains the blower, and can freeze the coil. You trade a hot upstairs for a broken system.
- Cranking the thermostat way down. The downstairs thermostat still shuts the system off when its floor gets cold. Now the first floor is freezing, the upstairs is still warm, and the bill went up.
- Buying a bigger system. Oversizing doesn't fix duct imbalance — the extra capacity still follows the same lopsided ducts, and the shorter cycles actually reduce how much air ever reaches the far upstairs runs. Distribution is the problem, not horsepower.
The fix ladder — cheapest honest step first
Here's the order we actually recommend, and you should be suspicious of any proposal that starts at the bottom of this list:
- Seasonal damper balancing (free). Partially close a few first-floor supply dampers in summer to push more air upstairs; reverse it in fall. Run the fan in ON instead of AUTO during heat waves to keep mixing air between floors.
- Return-air fixes (modest). Many KC two-stories have starved upstairs returns. Adding or enlarging a second-floor return lets the system actually pull the hot air off that floor. Duct sealing and upsizing choked runs — proper ACCA Manual D duct-design territory — belongs here too.
- Zoning (moderate). Motorized dampers split the duct system into floors, each with its own thermostat. Works best with variable-speed equipment that can ramp down for a single zone instead of choking against closed dampers.
- A dedicated mini-split for the problem floor (the real fix for stubborn cases). How to work the ladder without wasting money
Start free: balance dampers this weekend and run the fan ON through the next heat wave — that alone closes the gap in a surprising number of homes. If the upstairs is still uncomfortable, get the ducts evaluated before anyone talks equipment: measured airflow and static pressure will show whether returns and supply runs can be fixed, or whether the second floor genuinely needs its own mini-split system.
