The question everyone asks — and the field answer

Every estimate visit includes some version of "is this a good brand?" The honest field answer, after years of installing and repairing every major nameplate across the KC metro: the installation determines more of the outcome than the brand. Major manufacturers build to the same physics, buy compressors from a small set of suppliers, and have their performance verified through AHRI (the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute), which certifies rated capacity and efficiency for matched systems.

What AHRI can't certify is what happens in your basement on install day. Two identical units — same model, same serial-number sequence — can perform completely differently depending on who put them in. We've replaced premium-brand systems that failed young from a bad install, and tuned up builder-grade units still running strong at year eighteen because someone set them up right.

What the installer controls (which is almost everything)

Four installer decisions dominate how a system runs for the next 15 years:

  • Sizing. A real ACCA Manual J load calculation on your actual house — not a copy of the old unit's tonnage. Oversizing causes short cycling and poor humidity control in KC's zone 4A summers.
  • Airflow. Duct design per ACCA Manual D, and measured static pressure after install. The best equipment suffocates behind restrictive ducts.
  • Refrigerant charge. Charged by weight and verified by measurement, by an EPA Section 608 certified tech. An off-charge system loses capacity and eats compressors quietly.
  • Commissioning. Measuring and documenting temperature split, static pressure, charge, and gas pressure at startup — proof the system performs to its rating, not just that it turns on.

None of these appear on the brand brochure. All of them show up on your Evergy and Spire bills.

What actually differs between brands — and where people choose wrong

Brands do differ in real ways: parts availability (how fast a distributor in the KC metro can hand your tech a board or motor in January), warranty terms (length, what's covered, whether it transfers on sale, registration requirements), and dealer network quality (some brands vet their installers harder). Those are worth asking about. The three ways homeowners get this wrong:

  1. Chasing a premium nameplate installed by the lowest bidder. A top-tier unit with no load calc, no permit, and a guessed charge performs worse than a mid-tier unit installed correctly.
  2. Assuming a review-site brand ranking applies to their house. Reliability data mostly measures installation and maintenance quality, filtered through brand names.
  3. Ignoring parts logistics. An imported bargain brand with no local KC distributor means waiting on parts during a cold snap in Leavenworth. That is a real brand difference — just not the one the brochure covers.

The real KC math

Here's how it looks on service calls: when a system fails early or a homeowner in Lenexa or Gladstone complains that their new install never cooled right, the diagnosis is overwhelmingly an installation issue — oversizing, starved airflow, wrong charge, sloppy brazing — not a factory defect. Warranty claims cover parts; they don't cover the years of higher bills and poor comfort a bad install produces before something visibly breaks. The brand premium and the installation premium are not the same line item, and only one of them reliably pays you back.

The permit deserves a special word, because homeowners are often told it's optional paperwork. It isn't. The mechanical permit triggers a city inspection — a second set of eyes on gas connections, venting, electrical, and clearances — and an unpermitted install can surface at home sale, when the buyer's inspector asks for documentation you don't have. A contractor who volunteers to skip the permit to "save you money" is telling you exactly how the rest of the job will go.

Decision rule + what to do next

The rule: pick the installer first, then pick from the brands they stand behind. Vet the installer with four questions: Will you do a Manual J load calculation on my house? Will you pull the mechanical permit? Will you give me a commissioning report with measured numbers at startup? What are the warranty terms and who handles the claim?
